Youth leadership development

Latvian traditional roles for men and women are still very unequal. Changing these traditional gender stereotypes is an important way to reduce the risk that young people become victims of violence, and also thus vulnerable to human trafficking.

The Resource Centre for Women MARTA implemented for over two years, in various Latvian cities and rural areas, the use of a non-formal education method based on group work for girls and boys. This proces was conducted within a framework developed in Sweden and proved very succesful. Over 150 young people were coached through the process to become leaders of change in the prevailing ideas on gender norms.

The lesson learned is that young people benefit greatly from an open space to discuss every day life issues like friendship, relationships with family and the opposite sex, sexuality, and any personal interests. Very often is the case that they do not have anatural space where to do it and this type of group work creates precisely what is needed and provides guidance in appreciating tpics from different perspectives.
